Setting up the Acer Aspire is as easy as popping its included "Software Installation Disc" into a network PC and following the onscreen instructions. The setup process, which includes detecting the NAS in the network and installing the Windows Home Server Connector software, took us longer than expected, at about 20 minutes. The process bugged out twice for no specific reason and we had to do it again. The Aspire easyStore is plenty fast for most home applications, and its one-touch back-up feature is an excellent feature we’d like to see implemented on more servers. If you need to back up multiple PCs or just need a reliable server for a media-center extender, gaming console, or music-streaming system, we highly recommend you give this one a look.
The server doesn't offer RAID, an IP camera, or printer support, and its initial setup was a bit buggy. 3) On reboot press F2, enter boot menu and look for your hard drive under "Excluded boot devices", select your eSata drive and use "X" command to add to regular boot menu, then + to move to top of boot menu. In terms of design, the H340 isn't especially attractive. It's a big black cube with a door on the front that opens to reveal the four drive bays, two of which were filled with 1TB drives in the case of our review model. Drives placed in the top three bays are hot swappable, but the bottom one isn't because it stores the server's operating system on a 20GB partition.

A large power button, several blue LEDs, and a USB port protrude from the left corner, with four blue drive-bay LEDs on the right. Quiet operation; four easily accessible drive bays; very easy to set up. Gigabit Network ConnectionThe Acer Aspire Easystore H340 features a Gigabit Ethernet port for up to 10X the speed of most 100M network connections and excellent usability for home networks. Acer also includes a sixty day trial to McAfee Total Protection, which includes anti-virus/anti-spyware security suite.
There's no support for printers or a USB camera, unfortunately. There's also another USB port on the front that works with the server's one-button copy feature. Just plug a USB drive into this port and press the Copy button above it, and the entire contents of the drive will be copied onto the server's internal storage. This is actually a very neat backup feature that a lot of NAS servers offer. The front door swings open to expose four hot-swappable 3.5-inch drive bays, the bottom of which is occupied by a 1TB SATA hard drive. Drives can be added or removed without ever having to power down the server; you just pull out a tray, attach the drive, and slide it back into the bay.

The server comes with a Lights Out add-on preinstalled, which lets you configure the H340 to turn itself on and off at certain times of the day. You can download and install other add-ons, including a uTorrent plug-in which allows the server to download torrent files while your computer is turned off. It's when it comes to setting up the H340 that the benefits of the Windows Home Server operating system become obvious, as it's much easier to configure than most NAS devices.
However, the Atom-based NAS server doesn't come with any extra features, apart from what Windows Home Server 2003 gives you, which is already ample for most situations. To make up for that, you can add more hard drives to the Acer Aspire EasyStore H340's three empty bays without using any tools. It also comes with five USB ports and one eSATA port to host more storage.

The Aspire Easystore H340 features 4 internal hard drive bays for easy storage expansion. If that isn't enough, there are 5 external USB 2.0 ports for external storage devices, printers and wireless networking. Or, if you want to go wired, there's a Gigabit Ethernet port. An e-SATA port is provided for high-speed external drives. This gives you redundancy or the ability to attach networked devices. The server is powered by Intel’s Atom 230 CPU, which is outfitted with 512KB of L2 cache. This chip has a core clock speed of 1.6GHz and a front-side bus speed of 533MHz. (That machine is based on a 2.6GHz dual-core AMD Athlon FX-60 desktop CPU.) And since the Acer doesn’t need a lot of fans to keep it cool, it operated in near silence. The server is housed in an attractive cube-shaped enclosure measuring 7.9 inches wide by 7.1 inches deep by 8.3 inches high.
But it carries the same price tag as HP’s budget-oriented MediaSmart LX195, which has half as much memory and can accommodate only one internal hard drive. Unplug the power cord before removing the power supply unit from the computer. Install the power supply unit before connecting the power cord to the AC power outlet. I have FreeNAS installed on a Proliant Microserver so that's not an issue. It's whether or not I can repeat it on the Acer without 'big problems'. What happens then is that the H340 boots from the PXE recovery drive.
There are four additional USB ports in the back, along with one eSATA port and a gigabit LAN interface. You can back up the entire server by plugging a portable hard drive into the front USB port and touching one button. The NAS server comes with four media-related default folders, including Photos, RecordTV, Music, and Video. Files inside these folders are streamed to any media server-compatible devices, including set top boxes, game consoles, iTunes, and other computers.
